Women鈥檚 Health Strategy omits any plan to deliver promised osteoporosis clinics

Women with osteoporosis have been left deeply disappointed by the UK Government鈥檚 new Women鈥檚 Health Strategy, which contains no credible plan to deliver the Government鈥檚 pledge to extend Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) to every NHS trust.聽
Without a plan to deliver the policy, around 2,000 people will die following hip fractures every year who could have been kept alive by early detection - most of them women.
Half of women over 50 will suffer fractures due to osteoporosis, including broken hips. Yet half of NHS trusts in England still do not have an FLS in place, leaving most people undiagnosed until it is too late.
During the 2024 election, Health Secretary Wes Streeting was praised widely for committing to a nationwide rollout of FLS clinics as one of his first acts in post. Two years on, patients are still waiting - and no national plan, timetable or dedicated funding has been set out to deliver the rollout. Osteoporosis has been the Government鈥檚 only condition-specific commitment on women鈥檚 health.
Around 60 NHS trusts still lack these services. To be on track for nationwide coverage by 2030, FLS should already have been established in at least 24 additional trusts. Sadly today, no areas have benefited from roll-out which clearly puts the policy at risk.
黑料社Ambassador Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP, broadcaster and patient advocate, said: 鈥淭his strategy was the obvious place to honour the Government鈥檚 pledge to people with osteoporosis, so it鈥檚 extremely disappointing that this is absent. The roll-out of Fracture Liaison Services for people with osteoporosis has been this government鈥檚 most frequently made commitment on women鈥檚 health, restated more than 60 times in Parliament and the media. But two years on, patients are still waiting for delivery. Over 2,000 lives are at stake every year, so delay costs lives. Without a clear plan, timeline and resources, nationwide roll-out by 2030 simply won鈥檛 happen. If Ministers are serious about keeping the promise to people with osteoporosis, they need to publish a credible plan now.鈥澛
